I’m writing this letter to express my concern with New Zealand’s current low level of investment in health research, and to encourage your party to address this in the run up to the October 17th General Election.

I was disappointed to see from the New Zealanders for Health Research (NZHR) 2020 opinion poll report that the government has allocated a meagre 0.76% of health care costs towards health research. I agree with NZHR that the government should be allocating at least 2.4% of health care costs to health research. This will help to save New Zealanders’ lives and bring New Zealand to an investment level which shows that we’re pulling our weight internationally.

Please can you ensure if your party is in government after October 17th that it will adopt and vote for policies that see the government’s health research allocation increase to 2.4% of health care costs within the next ten years.

I was also surprised to learn that the recent report of the Health and Disability System review makes no recommendations which will see health research embedded as an essential component of the health system. 

We’ve all seen how the health research led response to the current Covid 19 pandemic has potentially saved thousands of New Zealanders’ lives. There are currently 5000 New Zealanders per year dying unnecessarily before they’ve had the chance to reach a ripe old age, and I can only imagine how many of these lives would be saved if the health and disability sectors were to be similarly led.

I’m therefore asking that you please promise that your party will recognise health research as a core part of the health system and ensure that there are clear pathways for ensuring that the results of health research are put into practice, leading to better outcomes for all New Zealanders.
